Funk-Pop Powerhouse Valeree flips the script on ageist, misogynistic clichés in euphoric disco anthem “Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving!”
On July 10th, LA’s favorite funk-infused popstar Valeree returns to the scene with the release of “Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving!”, teased as the lead single of a new era. This symphonic disco extravaganza sets the tone with huge live instrumentation, powerful vocals that float atop an infectious groove, and the signature tongue-in-cheek lyricism that’s been a staple throughout Valeree’s career. The second its larger-than-life orchestral opening hits, “Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving!” transports the listener right into a disco-fueled 70's summer, feeling distinctly ‘Valeree’ while simultaneously evoking disco legends of the past and present- ie Gloria Gaynor, ABBA, & Chappell Roan. Thematically, it serves as a celebration of life, womanhood, self-assurance, and decisively rejects the notion that youth defines women's value
“[Valeree] spins a series of dynamic and genuine pop songs rich with profound and intricate wordplay... using her brilliant songwriting talent to introspectively explore her past while also passionately advocating for women and mental health.”
Valeree’s story could easily be a Hollywood blockbuster- she’s survived addiction, homelessness, poverty, rehab, mental health struggles, grooming, gender-based trauma, and more; yet you’d never know it meeting her today. Speaking with Valeree, you experience a person full of humor, optimism, and a joie de vivre that’s equal parts charming and contagious. Following her last body of work (“Interrupted”, Album of the Year nominee at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards), Valeree experienced on-stage panic attacks and a mental health spiral which led her to believe she had to quit music altogether. Despite the impressive independent career and fanbase she’d organically cultivated (over 150k followers on socials and over 6 million streams) and her successes charting on college radio, receiving multiple award nominations and being lauded by countless music publications; it seemed that her inability to perform without experiencing panic attacks would render a sustainable career impossible. Cut to: about one year into a music-free life, working a cushy job that would be a career to most, she’d only felt more anxious and lost, and finally realized she would never find contentment while giving up her lifelong calling to make music. Valeree left the day jobs behind and put everything she had into becoming a better artist: she spent 9 months busking (and livestreaming it) as her main income source, successfully aiming to improve her live performance ability and overcome the panic attacks. She bought a textbook on music theory and taught herself enough to revolutionize the way she writes songs. She spent months studying melody and arrangement, took an unpaid internship at a recording studio in exchange for studio time, re-enrolled in therapy, and picked up some brand new diagnoses and psychiatric ‘scrips. She also fell in love and got engaged to her parter of now 4 years, the effects of which she explores in her upcoming songwriting. If “Interrupted” was a deep-dive into the trauma and healing of her 20’s, “Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving!” marks the beginning of a lighter and more hopeful chapter: one of freedom, laughter, and lots and lots of dancing.
“Not only does Valeree showcase her remarkable emotive power, but she is also accompanied by a delightful jazz fusion flair that leaves listeners in awe…this sets Valeree apart from the cacophony of sameness that many of her contemporaries, unfortunately, fall into… Truly a remarkable and beautiful album.”
“Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving” was inspired by Valeree’s recent experience of turning 30 and spending months haunted by an other-shoe-drop feeling: an expectation informed by a lifetime of subliminal messaging that a mental crisis about aging must be coming, only to finally realize a crisis was not in her cards! Instead, all she felt was joy, confidence, and excitement for her next chapter. She also wanted to write the song as a bit of a cheeky middle finger to the music industry, which had told her time and time again that if you don’t “make it” by 25 years old, your career is over. “I wanted to announce IN my music that I’ve hit the big 3-0, I’m well past a dinosaur according to the industry, and yet I’m proud to be making the best music I’ve ever written and I feel confident that it’ll resonate with the fans and perform well. I’ve never wanted a label, I don’t want a bunch of men in suits making decisions about my music, so why the hell would I even listen to their outdated nonsense?” Valeree said of her decision to write the song. This shimmering, maximalist feat also marks Valeree’s debut as lead (and sole) producer. As she is the song’s sole composer, “Thirty, Flirty, and Thriving!” is entirely written and produced by women, a very on-brand development. While she’s yet to officially announce what’s to come, she has teased that this is the first taste of much more new music to come.
